Nobel event

Join us to watch President Obama receive the Nobel Peace prize in the beautiful, historical setting of the Nobel Museum, Börshuset, Stortorget, Gamla Stan, in Stockholm.

This will take place on Thursday, December 10, 2009 at 12.45 pm. A brief introduction will be made by Peter Zander from the Nobel Museum, and from 1-2 pm there will be a Live Streaming of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony in Oslo, including the Nobel Lecture. The admission is free, but you need to the DASweden Secretary at secretary@democratsabroad.se by Monday, December 7th to let me know that you are coming. Those who sign up will also receive a free copy of “The Nobelprize.org Guide to the 2009 Nobel Laureates”, a wonderful keepsake.

There will be free Nobel Lectures in Stockholm all week, starting December 7th, and here is the link with all the information: http://nobelprize.org/nobelfoundation/press/2009/nobelweek_print_photo_09.html
You need to sign up for each lecture at the designated email address. (This is for private citizens, as well as press.)

For those who do not live in Stockholm, or cannot attend, the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony and the Nobel Lectures will also be available as video-on-demand on http://nobelprize.org/.

In keeping with President Obama’s Call to Service in the Community (http://serve.gov/)
Democrats Abroad Sweden members will be provided with opportunities to serve the Swedish Community throughout 2010. To that end we have been working with the Swedish Red Cross and here is an opportunity to help before the end of 2009

The Swedish Red Cross is very active in social work in Sweden – especially activities for elderly and migrants. At Christmas time we raise funds for our social work and we would be very thankful if you can help us (Swedish is not needed).

From December 2-6, we will have a fundraising event in Skärholmen Centrum. Here we will sell gift wrappings for Christmas gifts and have a Christmas card workshop where visitors can create their own Christmas greetings. This is all for the purpose of fundraising for our social work and for spreading information about the Red Cross and what we do in Sweden.

As a volunteer at this event you will work a two hour shift. So if you can join us and work one shift, these are the shifts we need to cover:
Wednesday 2 December through Friday 4 December: 16-18 or 18-20
Saturday 5 December: 10-12, 12-14, 14-16 or 16-18
Sunday 6 December: 12-14, 14-16 or 16-18

If you want to help, please include your mobile number in your reply to dashalland(at)gmail.com, so that the Red Cross can get in touch with you if necessary.

This event is located in Skärholmens Centrum (t-bana Skärholmen), Bredholmsgången – outside the public library.

House Passes Health Care Reform Bill

Monday, November 9th, 2009

The Washington Post reports:

Hours after President Obama exhorted Democratic lawmakers to “answer the call of history,” the House hit an unprecedented milestone on the path to health-care reform, approving a trillion-dollar package late Saturday that seeks to overhaul private insurance practices and guarantee comprehensive and affordable coverage to almost every American.

Attention will now shift back to the Senate. If the Senate acts, negotiations to iron out differences between the two chambers could be wrenching. Among the toughest issues: whether the public option should include an “opt out” clause for states, as Reid has proposed; whether to require employers to provide coverage to their workers or take the less punitive approach preferred by Senate moderates; and whether to tax the rich or tax high-cost health-care policies, as the Senate proposed — a provision economists call the most important provisions in either bill for reining in costs.
