Misleading and mendacious statements have been reported in, or even made by, the press recently.

After the political rhetoric and media sideshows at the Republican Convention, one longs to find an effective rebuttal, or effective antidote, to all that was said there. The national debate needs to return to the problems facing the USA, and how they might be solved!

The best rebuttal comes from Senator Barack Obama himself, and now from his running mate Senator Joseph Biden as well. Both speak to the issues that confront the people of our nation.

For busy people in this Central European time zone, and excellent source of information, inspiration, and talking points can be found on Senator Obama’s website, www.barackobama.com. The site provides links to audio and video recordings of speeches as well as slide shows from campaign events. If you click on “issues” on the upper band of the home page you can find Senator Obama’s program regarding a long list of issues. Under all the topics I clicked through there were additional links to a video archive so that you can watch speeches and panel discussions on the topics. For example, I just finished listening to a Foreign Policy Forum dating from New Hampshire, November 2007. This wasn’t Barack himself, but a panel of scholars who discussed and fielded questions about Obama’s foreign policy program and his track record. (One of the scholars, already then, remarked on the curious assertions in the press that Obama has no experience or policy suggestions!) The time it takes to watch at least Part One of the forum is well worth the time.

TELL YOUR FRIENDS IF THEY DON’T KNOW THIS ALREADY.

If you need inspiration to make an extra effort to persuade your associates this year and to help get people to the polls, one good analysis of our current political and social malaise is Al Gore’s recent book, The Assault on Reason (New York, The Penguin Press, 2007).
